Byalynichy will become the "cultural capital of the year" in 2024

28 March 2023

In 2024, the status of "Cultural Capital of the Year" will be assigned to Byalynichy. This decision was made at a meeting of the collegium of the Ministry of Culture.

In 2023, the Ministry of Culture considered applications and presentation materials for granting the status of "Cultural Capital of the Year" to such cities as Kamenets, Glubokoe, Mozyr, Svisloch and Belynichi. Based on the results of the collegium of the department, it was decided to assign the status of "Cultural Capital of the Year" in 2024 to Byalynichy.

As Irina Karpovich, head of the culture and folk arts department of the Ministry of Culture, said, the status of "Cultural Capital of the Year" is assigned on the basis of certain criteria. “We have criteria in the resolution. They are connected with the ongoing work in the framework of the cultural education of the population. In addition, it is important to have a material and technical base. Attention was also paid to the work with historical and cultural heritage, which is carried out in a particular city. The criteria were the same for all participants. The members of the collegium received evaluation sheets, and the counting commission summed up the results on the basis of a secret ballot,” said Irina Karpovich.

She added that this event is held for the 15th time. “Initially, large cities of Belarus, such as Grodno, Brest or Polotsk, became the cultural capital. This year the cultural capital of our republic is represented by Slutsk. But it also applies to small towns. At the same time, they are very colorful and full of cultural life. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate all the advantages to the guests of the cultural capital throughout the year, saturating the region with various cultural events,” concluded Irina Karpovich.
