Benefits, increased salaries and housing - in Mogilev, trade unions discussed mechanisms for retaining young specialists

30 November 2023

At an extended meeting of the Mogilev City Association of Trade Unions, statistics were presented: last year, more than 1.5 thousand young specialists received their first jobs in city organizations, more than 800 of them in industrial organizations. The chairman of the city association of trade unions, Mikhail Kulagin, spoke about this .

According to him, an analysis of the last five years has shown that approximately 50% of young specialists, after completing their training, are assigned to large industrial enterprises in the city. A higher rate in healthcare institutions is 73%, in preschool, general secondary and additional education institutions – 61%. The main reasons for the dismissal of young specialists are failure to renew the contract on the part of the employee after the expiration of the mandatory service period, conscription for military service, dismissal by transfer, admission to a university.

As Mikhail Kulagin noted, in order to support and secure young specialists, collective agreements of enterprises include sections “Social protection of youth”, “Work with youth”, “Youth”, which provide certain benefits. This is the establishment of a reduced production rate for young people, an increase in the tariff salary, the provision of additional incentive leaves, the provision of a preferential right to a hostel, rental housing or partial reimbursement of the costs of rent and utilities, and the provision of one-time financial assistance to young professionals.

The number of preferences and benefits provided by the collective agreement in excess of labor legislation directly depends on the financial and economic situation of the enterprise. But the attitude of the head of the organization together with the trade union committee on this issue is no less important here in order to create a good moral and psychological climate and motivate workers. Trade unions pay special attention to the adaptation of young people in the workplace. Most industrial enterprises hold Days of Young Specialists and Young Workers. The program of these events includes getting to know the enterprise, its history and traditions, structure, holding meetings with management and chief specialists, labor veterans, trade union leaders, and representatives of public associations. Young people have the opportunity to ask questions, express wishes, and join the work team.

– By actively working with young people, trade unions are working for the future. Youth trade unionists are literate people who clearly assess the political and international situation, have patriotic, creative views on life, and are future active members of the country’s civil society,” Mikhail Kulagin emphasized.
