Lukashenko: Vitebsk Oblast needs a serious shake-up

15 December 2021

Vitebsk Oblast needs a reset or a serious shake-up, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he introduced a new governor to the Vitebsk Oblast senior officials on 15 December, BelTA has learned.

According to the head of state, there are examples of good results achieved by some industrial and agricultural enterprises. At the same time the region has nothing to boast about, the president stressed.

“It is obvious that the region needs a reset. A serious shape-up. Please draw the appropriate conclusions over the winter,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

In his words, over the past seven years the Vitebsk Oblast gross regional product decreased by more than 8%. This year, Vitebsk Oblast is the country's only region where the gross regional product continues to decline, mainly due to construction and agriculture. “Many agricultural development indicators have been deteriorating in recent years. Areas under crops and harvests have been on decline. The number of cattle, milk and egg production has decreased. The reason behind it is the low organization of labor, non-compliance with agricultural deadlines and regulations. Executive discipline is bad. Do not tell me that you do not have enough staff. We have to pull it together if we do not want to lose the country. You have enough of everything,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

The president said he was especially alarmed by the lack of tangible economic effect from the implementation of the decree on the development of the Vitebsk Oblast agro-industrial complex. The performance of agricultural associations remains unprofitable. Without the state support 72% of agricultural organizations in the region are unprofitable.

“That is why I decided to appoint a promising leader as the region's new governor, for whom Vitebsk Oblast is a native land – Aleksandr Mikhailovich Subbotin. I should tell you frankly: he had a desire to go to work in his native region. I appreciate that he is doing this in a difficult, challenging time. I really want him to succeed here with you,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president added that Aleksandr Subbotin directly participated in the development of new approaches to the development of the agro-industrial complex and associations. To a certain extent, he is a co-author. “I am sure he understands how everything should be implemented in practice,” the head of state said.
