Six Belarusians employed via private contracts leave Sudan for Egypt

29 April 2023

Six Belarusian citizens, who had been working for Sudanese companies as part of private contracts, have left Sudan for Egypt across the land border. Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz mentioned it when asked by a BelTA reporter to comment on mass media reports claiming that Belarusian pilots, who had been stuck in Sudan, had been evacuated.

Anatoly Glaz said: “Not entirely correct. Six Belarusian citizens, who had been working for Sudanese companies as part of private contracts instead of the Belarusian air carrier, have left Sudan for Egypt across the land border. Besides, this initiative entailed huge risks. They managed to cross the border only thanks to active assistance of our diplomats and Russian colleagues. Egyptian authorities also met us halfway. The citizens are now in Egypt for the sake of going to Belarus later on.”

As of 28 April ten citizens of the Republic of Belarus are staying in Sudan, including three housed in the Russian embassy complex. The locations of all the Belarusians are known and are the safest ones in the current conditions. The consular service of the Belarusian embassy in Egypt stays in touch with all of them.

“Methods and ways of evacuating them are being worked out,” Anatoly Glaz said.

The official said: “Belarus is extremely alarmed and concerned by the development of the situation in Sudan. We urge the conflicting parties to show restraint, ensure protection of civilians and diplomatic missions in Khartoum and create the possibility of evacuation of the foreign citizens staying in Sudan. We believe that a peaceful resolution of the current crisis on the basis of a national consensus is the only way out of the situation.”
